This reminded me of ‘back in the day’ at the public swimming pool; there was this girl that would sit cross-legged atop a bar stool and click the counter as people would enter the gate. She was very cute but you could not talk to her because she was afraid of losing count. She was replaced at some point with a turnstile I don’t much remember what the turnstile looked like…
I like to think after the swimming pool gig she moved on to the fast paced world of pedestrian counter, she really deserved a promotion.
The counter I saw, and who very nicely allowed me to take the photograph, was cute. It must be a requirement.

I find it remarkable that the counts are so close on the N, E and W clickers (I can only guess that the S is registering in that ball-park as well.)
Not knowing how long it took to run up those numbers – but even if it were 5000 pedestrians in a single day, I would think a casual observer could call that a “busy” intersection and go ahead and place the order for whatever it is they are trying to justify. But, I suppose numbers don’t lie.
It was about two when I passed her. It is a very busy spot.
